Tragedy. Abductions, robberies, murders… I sat yesterday in the waiting room of the dentist office, I listened to the news and the people surrounding me discuss the catastrophic state of our world. People asked, “How is it that the world today has so drastically deviated from the divine purpose and will of God?” “Why is it that not so long ago, people demonstrated a respect for the elderly, just because of their age, yet today people rarely respect anyone?” An apparently wise elderly man suddenly uttered and explanation. The words so confidently and readily spoken were so simple, yet so profound, “People have lost the fear of God.” Those words that silenced the room and penetrated through my heart consistently echoed in my mind. “If you do not fear and respect GOD, the creator of the universe, the ruler of time, who will you dare respect?”
I have since pondered those words. The depth of truth in them dare not be overlooked I realized that mankind has committed the most dangerous offense by violating the reverence and glory of God in taking our trust and confidence in Him and placing it instead in man- in ourselves. Frankly, people deny the very existence of God, let alone fear Him, let alone honor and respect Him, let alone love Him, let trust Him. Mankind has not only denied His existence with mere words, however, we have denied Him and we deny Him daily through our thoughts, our actions and the attitudes of our hearts. Every time we put our own will above the will of God we are saying, “God, I do not take you seriously.” In other words, “I do not fear you”, “I do not trust you” which is the equivalent to “I do not love you.” Scary isn’t it? I tremble at the reality that we have broken His greatest commandment- Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, mind and strength! This is not something to take lightly.
A lack of fear in God result in a lack of trust in God which results in a lack of love for God which results in a lack of obedience towards God which results in the world we see today. Tragedy. Destruction. Darkness. Death. It is imperative that each of examine our own lives and ask, “Do I really fear God? Do I really take Him seriously? Do I really love Him?” Otherwise, what purpose is there to life? And how easy will it become for us take life for granted? Something to ponder…
The Lord of hosts–regard Him as holy and honor His holy name [by regarding Him as your only hope of safety], and let Him be your fear and let Him be your dread [lest you offend Him by your fear of man and distrust of Him].
